During the first week you have your bin, you should be careful with the volume of food that you dump in for your worms. Wait until you see that they have consumed the first portion, then add the next load of scraps. Keep increasing your volume of food scraps until gradually you can dispose of the entire amount of waste into the bin as worm food.

What Worms Like and Don’t Like From Your Kitchen Scraps

Just like in a compost pile created in an outdoor environment, the vermicomposting worms eats the same kinds of organic matter which includes kitchen scraps, bits of paper, garden litter, etc. Presumably, however, most of the matter dumped into your in-home worm bin would consist of kitchen waste produce. The worms would thrive on kitchen scraps like leftover food, vegetable and fruit peelings, etc. Here is a suggestion for keeping the worms happy with their food and for you to reap a richer harvest of castings: Section your worm bin, and bury the food scraps and other waste in one section per feeding. Don’t overload the bin with too much waste. What you should do is to wait until the better part of the earlier feed has been consumed by the worms before burying the next load. The quality of your vermicompost will depend on the quality of kitchen scraps. In other words, the castings will reflect what you feed your worms with. The more variety you put in to your bin, the richer the fertilizer you will get.
